See? See how necessary that was?So what are we then, plants or reptiles? The big question here is, would we be able to live without the sun? Here's another diagram, because I can:
As you can see, humans fit into the middle category, along with battery-powered robots, some mushrooms, lizards, earthworms and possibly aliens. You already knew all that. I just wanted to make some diagrams.
The question is, why if we don't need the sun do we make such an effort to soak up as much of it as possible? You may have heard an old and rather annoying song stating that "mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun". Yes, the sun is rare in England. That just makes us more prone to burning and heat stroke. Still every year when we finally get our first "warm day" of the season we slather up with sun cream, cover our backs, put on our biggest hats and go out to find a shady spot so we don't spend too long in the sun. When we could have just stayed at home, still warm, still cozy, but without the risk of heat stroke.
Here are some possible reasons:
- We like to show off our 'summer clothes'
- We want to build up a tan
- Our houses are cold on the inside
- We're outdoorsy people, but squeamish about cold and too proud to put a jacket on
- We're secretly a plant, a solar-powered robot or a certain kind of mushroom
Building up a tan is the only reason I can see there that seems legitimate. Of course, you can go to a tanning salon but here's a diagram showing the results of the kind of tanning Average Jo and Josephine can afford:
Anything better than that is going to be Too Much Money by far. So does that mean everybody who goes out in the sun intends to get a natural tan? No. The most common answer we get is that people do it to
"enjoy the sun"
but what does that actually mean? Do people just do it to be warm? That can't be it. We can be warm in our own homes with much less effort and expense. So if we're not going out for a tan and we're not going out to be warm, there's really only one possible conclusion. Brace yourselves:
we are plants
I know. I'm as surprised as you are, but my argument makes perfect sense! See how many diagrams I included? Yes. That proves it. Don't let the government know that we know. You know, I started this post not knowing where it was going to lead.
